Accident & Emergency Radiology: A Survival Guide

Accident & Emergency Radiology Second Edition

The Second Edition won the FIRST PRIZE in the Radiology section at the 2005 BMA Medical Book Competition. Comments from the BMA Judges included:

"The quality of the radiographs and the accompanying diagrams is outstanding . . . the distillation of key radiographic features of important conditions is brilliant and the quality of radiographic reproduction . . . If it were made compulsory for all new SHOs to own and read this book it would probably do more to reduce the burden of medical negligence than any other clinical governance measure!"

The emphasis is placed on "these films appear normal to me - is there anything I should check?" Simple schemes for checking the radiographs are provided which are aimed at reducing errors in interpretation.

The Second Edition was published in 2005. The analytical format has been maintained but every chapter has added value features. The same basic theme is repeated - "these images look normal to me . . . but how can I be sure that I am not overlooking an important abnormality?" Additional explanatory drawings, superb radiographic illustrations, and helpful lists are key attractions.

The book is provided as part of the registration fee on the A&E Radiology Survival courses for Doctors. This allows participants to concentrate on the teaching rather than being distracted by taking notes.

The Chest X-ray: A Survival Guide

The Chest X-Ray: A Survival Guide

We have spent 4 years working on this book. It will be published in November 2007.

In these days of high technology imaging the clinical value of the chest radiograph remains undiminished. This tried and tested examination remains the most frequently requested radiological investigation in every general hospital. Yet the basic skills that are essential for an accurate and informed assessment of the CXR are often missing because of a preoccupation with other sophisticated imaging techniques.

This pocket survival guide contains more than 350 CXRs, 200 explanatory drawings, important secrets from the radiologist's toolbox, helpful differential diagnoses, handy checklists, rules to follow, and key references. Utilising a practical approach based on a clinical format, it is written in a succinct, friendly and informal style. It provides the basic knowledge that is absolutely essential for acquiring a logical approach to the analysis of the CXR.

Part A concentrates on fundamental principles and key anatomical concepts, together with descriptions of the CXR features that provide subtle evidence of abnormality.

Part B addresses common problems and dilemmas that occur in everyday clinical practice. The Chest X-ray: A Survival Guide will be invaluable to any physician working in general medicine, chest medicine, intensive care or the emergency department…whether as an attending physician, consultant, resident or specialist registrar. Students at all levels will find that the combination of an easy to follow text and exceptional illustrations provide the foundations for the development of an informed and skilful approach to CXR interpretation. Even experienced radiologists will find the informative clinical approach to be of value in their everyday work and teaching practice.

The book is provided as part of the registration fee on the Chest X-ray Survival Course and the Advanced Chest X-ray Study Day. This allows registrants to concentrate on the teaching rather than being distracted by taking notes.
